Book Haul September 2015

Here all the amazing books that Septembre provided me with !!

it was an eventful month!! I spent a week in el-Maamoura where I met a bookworm-male version of me on the beach and I went books-haunting several times.

While I was in el-Maamoura, I bought The Art of the Personal Essay: An Anthology from the Classical Era to the Present by  , for only 5dt from Thursday souk. I'm so excited to read it.

I bought Plum Spooky by  for 2dt from Rue des tanneurs. I already hate this book.

last week, I bought my second science-fiction book. it cost me only 1dt. well, I'm not excited to read it. It's going to be another book on my shelves.

I was super excited when my brother bought me this book رياض الصالحين by . He wants me to be a more religious person.
By the end of the month, it was time to go back to school. so, I had to buy these 3 following books for my anglophone and American literature classes: I bought them in printed versions since they are not available in the Tunisian libraries. the books are

How Reading Changed My Life

“Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination and the journey. They are home.”

I have enjoyed reading this book. It is a memoir of a bookworm; she talks about her experience with books as well as her experience with reading and writing. The book examines subjects many of bibliophiles are familiar with such as the need for a physical book in your hand and she discusses it in an original manner:
"It's 30 years since man first walked on the moon, and when people sit down to a big old fashioned supper it is still a plate of roast beef and mashed potatoes, not a capsule and a glass of water. When they buy a creamsicle, it's 3dimensional, wet and cold and wonderful. That's because people like the thing itself. They don't eat mashed potatoes with gravy because they just need to be nourished, but because mashed potatoes and gravy are wonderful in so many ways: the heat, the texture, the silky slide of the gravy over your tongue. And that is the way it is with books. It is not simply that we need information, but that we want to savor it, carry it with us, feel the heft of it under our arm. We like the thing itself. It is not possible that the book is over. Too many people love it so."
I really can relate to many of Quindlen's experiences as a reader. Quindlen shares also other stories such as Oprah Winfrey’s; sad story which left me in tears. The book is wonderful and inspiring. The writer takes a common subject and develops it in very enjoyable topic.

How Reading Changed My Life is a short volume of reflections on the role reading has played in Anna Quindlen's life and development as a writer. It is a quick, easy, and entertaining read, and one in which I find Quindlen’s experiences with reading often reflect my own. I highly recommend it to all the bookworms.

Checkmate

That moment when I started losing, I knew I hated playing games to you. I was seeing the whole board with checkmate already insight. I was ten steps ahead from you and you were following my lead. You were dazzled in my maze, puzzled and you could not put the pieces together. I was Alice and you were in my city of wonder. The clock was ticking and time was flying by when I realized that even the “angels had their wicked scheme”. The hunter became the hunted. I was playing your game; I was a pawn on your chess and while I was trying to figure out what to do next, you were thinking ten moves ahead. The game turned out to be so evil and you took it to a new extreme. You made me walk through hell; hell did not suffocate me, but the agony of it did. You were Queen-Bee; safe in the hive, witnessing the game move by move. You were the author who was writing empty endless pages between us. So many words we were not saying. Why was it hard to say them? There is a question in my mind; how many times you did deceive? I just can’t believe how you played me like a fool and I loved you. Now is the end of the game, you can remove the mask and admit you regret it from the start.

حديثك يشبهني

« The wise man should always follow the road that have been trodden by the great, and imitate those who have most excelled, so that, if he cannot reach their perfection, he may at least acquire something of its savor »
This is pretty much what Yami Ahmad is doing; he is following the road of “the great”, such as Ghassen Kanfeni, Mahmud Darwish, Nawal al Sa’ddewi and Ghadda al Saman, and you can taste their influence in his words. He does not only use them as references and quotes from their works but also adopts their beliefs and merges them with a Gazanian vision of the world.
I love the fact that Yami uses stream of consciousness on both his characters, Reem and Adam. The reader can have access to the story from the inner mind-state of the person. I like this style because “you never really understand a person … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”

After reading the book, I learned four things: first, our world is not a wish-granting factory. Second, what slut time is, it screws everybody. Third, considering the way the world is, one happy day is almost a miracle. In the end, the most interesting people always leave.

Free Online Books

“There is nothing like the smell of books, both new and old. If someone ever bottled the smell, I would be all over it .”. I really really Love the smell of  books , especially the old ones ^^
However, these days books became so expensive and very hard to find. Sometimes I roam all the libraries in Tunisia, and I don't find what I'm looking for. This is so depressing -_-
So, eventually I restore to the Pdf versions.
Here are some Links from where I get my Pdfs.

Before judging a person be neutral and:
1-Listen to this person, and follow his doings.
2-Compare his ideas and teachings with what is acceptable to the mind and heart.
3-If you think that his thoughts are right, compare them with his doings; is he applying his teachings?
4-If he is applying his teachings and sayings, so he is for sure right and one must believe him.
At the end you will get a clear answer for all confusing questions and you will know for sure
