The Eternal Husband is a novella ( a novella: too short to be a novel , too long to be a short story) by
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, which is the least known book of his works. I only came across the book when my American Literature teacher compared the characters from The eternal Husband with the characters from Billy Budd, Sailor by Herman Melville and explained to us the mimetic desire theory by René Girard (Ps: In order to understand better the novella, you need to read about this theory). Despite the fact that my teacher spoiled every part of the book and he didn't even care, I put the book on my TBR (to-be-read) list and I didn't regret it, because:
-The story is about two mentally-ill men; one is the eternal husband the other is the predatory type. they share a funny and intense relationship.
-The plot is thrilling and devilish, funny and fascinating.
-It is edgy and suspenseful tale. It is Tragic yet it has comedic elements
-"Does he or doesn't he know?" is the central question of a mundane drama.
-It includes acts of revenge.
-it deals with psychological issues.
-It deals with love and pain.
-It is interesting and engaging.
-It explains the obsessive and the subject relationship.
and I enjoyed reading it. In fact, I laughed and cried. I was shocked and mesmerized .
The book is a master-piece which is well crafted by Dostoyevsky and I highly recommend it.
